Wearing Hats of many aspirations with Ajai

Stories of extraordinary lives inspire and encourage us to tread the path less traveled. The life of Ajai Chowdhry, renowned as the co-founder of HCL, is such an inspiring tale. Far beyond his corporate title, Ajai's multifaceted career and remarkable achievements became evident after a personal encounter and delving into his book, "Just Aspire."

Having possessed a copy of his book for months, it wasn't until a chance meeting at a Nudge Institute event that I truly appreciated its significance. After a brief chat with Ajai and a signed copy later, I embarked on a journey through his life story.

Ajai's early life, marked by relocation due to his father's civil servant role, exposed him to diverse cities and experiences. His childhood narrative resonates with many, particularly the parental pressure in the 60s to pursue IAS or IFS careers. It's a reminder that even top corporate executives face familiar challenges.

Through podcasts and his book, Ajai's many passions and the humble beginnings of HCL, founded with a mere 1.87 lakhs rupees, came to light. Their venture into a joint sector cooperation with the state government leading to the iconic name "Hindustan Computers Limited" is a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of the 70s, a time when the term "start-up" was virtually unknown.

A childhood memory of DCM resurfaced as I read about Ajai's time at the company. While the history of DCM and the founding of HCL with Shiv Nadar and colleagues warrants a separate article, I was particularly captivated by the calculators Ajai sold. Described as a "bulky, box-like gadget" priced at an astonishing INR 10,000 (equivalent to nearly 4 lakhs today), it underscored the rapid pace of technological progress.

Among Ajai's countless milestones, Shiv Nadar's invitation to lead HCL Infosystems as CEO stands out. It unlocked numerous opportunities and experiences, reflecting Ajai's unwavering eagerness to learn and evolve as a leader. This pivotal moment seemed to redefine his vision and leadership approach.

One sentence from the book left an indelible mark:

"If you have aspiration, resources will happen."

A powerful statement affirming that genuine aspirations and intent will attract the necessary resources. As someone in their mid-20s, reflecting on past aspirations resonates deeply with this sentiment.

While the book inspired agreement on many fronts, a few points sparked respectful disagreement. A future meeting with Ajai would provide an opportunity to delve deeper into these perspectives.

In conclusion, "Just Aspire" is a must-read for those who dare to dream. Ajai's journey as an entrepreneur, sportsman, salesman, engineer, educationalist, and investor is a wellspring of courage and inspiration. He is wearing Hats of many aspirations. It underscores the vital role of sales in life and serves as a reminder that with the right aspirations, anything is possible.
